Thistlegorm Wreck

The wreck of the Thistlegorm has been called the "third most beautiful wreck in the world" for the corals, the soft corals, the marine life that has settled on and around it but above all for the incredible war cargo still clearly visible. It is a British merchant ship 130 meters long and 18 meters wide, launched on April 5, 1940 and used to transport supplies of war material for the English troops.

Having set sail from Glasgow, the famous wreck of the Thistlegorm sank in 1941 in the area of Sha'ab Ali in the Gulf of Suez, while heading towards Alexandria in Egypt.
After being hit on the night between October 5 and 6, 1941 by a group of German bombers, a series of fires and strong explosions were triggered, which caused the death of 9 of the 39 crew members.
The survivors took refuge in lifeboats.

The wreck now rests at a depth of 30-32 meters and only the stern is tilted due to the explosion that completely sectioned the hull.

Inside the holds that can be visited there is part of the cargo of supplies that it carried: light tanks, weapons, ammunition, trucks, railway wagons, motorcycles, jeeps. The cargo is perfectly recognizable, despite the coral encrustations present. Around the wreck, sedentary fish, pelagic fish swim, and it is also easy to encounter groupers, moray eels, angelfish, triggerfish, snappers, barracudas.
